Therapist-Led DIY Music Therapy
Help your clients manage their emotions,
communicate more effectively,
and get in tune with themselves using something
they already love: Music!
MUSIC LISTNENING
Guided meditations help us to ground our emotions and connect to ourselves on a deeper level. Lyric analysis helps us to put words to how we feel and express our thoughts.
WRITING
Music-assisted journaling helps us to explore feelings outside of the moment. Songwriting exercises can help us to use music to explain how we feel and communicate that to others.
ACTIVE MUSIC MAKING
Drumming allows us to physicalize what we are feeling and to explore emotions through a different medium. No prior music experience or knowledge needed!
CREATIVE ARTS
Creating imagery with the assistance of music can help us explore non-verbal pathways to emotions and expression. No drawing or art skills required!
Through this evidence-based program developed by Marlys Woods, Board-Certified Music Therapist and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, your clients will learn how to use music tools to create a greater sense of self alignment.a

The PLAYLIST OF TOOLS
Why music?
Music is a powerful, universal tool, used throughout the existence of humanity as a method of communication, a way to influence emotions, and a means to access connection to ourselves and others. Furthermore, learning with music is done through a double encoding process, where information is processed both verbally and aurally. This strengthens the memory trace during learning. Music, when used actively and intentionally, is a uniquely impactful healing tool!
However, most people do not inherently know how to use music to move towards healing - your clients might even be using music in a harmful way, to isolate and stay stuck in a dysregulated or negative emotional state. And, while unintended, therapists who use music in sessions without a proper understanding of how music connects to emotions can potentially trigger overwhelming emotions, harmful behaviors, and/or repressed memories.
We want to help YOU use music in therapy. Through our easy to follow session plans, you will have all the direction and tools you need to show your clients how to take their connection to music and use it safely and effectively in their healing journey.

But…What If *I’m* Not Creative?
And Even if I am, I Don’t Have Time to Practice or Learn a New Skill!
Good news: We’ve done all the work for you! You don’t have to have any experience being a musician, a writer, an artist, or anything else - and neither do your clients. You can use the exercises we’ve put together for you as is, or you can use them as templates if you feel inspired!
Using creativity in your sessions can help clients access different parts of their minds, parts that can help them open up and express more quickly than talk therapy alone. That means more effective sessions for you and your client!
Along with the exercises, we’ve given you some important do’s and don’ts for using music and other creative arts in your practice so you can feel confident using these tools.
